BOWLING GREEN, KY- U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell offered insight into current U.S. legislation when he spoke to the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, May 26, during a Washington Update. More than 100 Chamber partners attended the event, which was held at the Chamber headquarters. Cambridge Market & Café sponsored the day’s luncheon.
“The Chamber is proud to host events like the Washington Update to promote legislative awareness among our Chamber partners and the community,” said Marc Elliott, CEcD, AICP, Chamber vice president for property development and public policy. “Senator McConnell has been a strong advocate for South Central Kentucky, and this event gave the Chamber and partners an excellent opportunity to thank him.”
Senator McConnell discussed the recent nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, saying Senate Republicans will “…treat Judge Sotomayor fairly. But we will thoroughly examine her record to ensure she understands that the role of a jurist in our democracy is to apply the law even-handedly, despite his/her own feelings or personal or political preferences.”
“I enjoyed getting the chance to meet with the Chamber to discuss both national and local issues that are important to the Chamber partners, as well as all Kentuckians,” Senator McConnell said.
Senator McConnell also updated the Chamber on President Obama’s proposed budget and the president’s pledge to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp.
“It is a privilege to have Senator McConnell represent Kentucky in such a prominent way on the national stage,” said Chamber Chairman Todd Davis. “A Washington Update such as this is an additional effort in which the Chamber is helping to give our partnership an understanding of current legislation in Washington. We appreciate the opportunity to have Senator McConnell share his views with our Chamber partners.”
