BOWLING GREEN, KY-United States Senator Jim Bunning offered insights into current U.S. legislation when he spoke to the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, April 9, during his Washington Update, which was sponsored by Jim Johnson Nissan Hyundai, at the Kentucky Museum on Western Kentucky University's campus.

"Washington Updates such as this one provide Chamber partners with an opportunity to learn about federal legislation firsthand from officials like Senator Bunning. One of our goals is to help our partners learn more about legislation that will affect them, and Senator Bunning's presentation helped us in meeting that goal," said Chamber Chairman Todd Davis. "The event on Thursday also gave us a special chance to thank Senator Bunning for all that he does for South Central Kentucky."

Senator Bunning touched on issues dominating conversations in the U.S. Senate at this time, particularly financial bailouts, the mortgage crisis, and affordable education, as well as proposed legislation for card checks and universal healthcare. During his remarks, he shared his concerns over the increasing level of debt the United States is facing-$12.5 trillion currently. He warned against the government continuing to spend money at an unsustainable rate and spoke about the work of the Federal Reserve.

"We're proud to host events like the Washington Update to promote legislative awareness in our community," said R. Marc Elliott, CEcD, AICP, Chamber vice president for property development and public policy. "We appreciate Senator Bunning taking time out of his schedule to visit the Chamber and Bowling Green because he affords us an opportunity to learn more about the activities in Washington that will influence our local community."
